How does an autostick work in an old Volkswagen Bug?

I don't know really anything about cars and am looking for my first one. I don't know how to drive a manual so i want to know if it's optional to choose between automatic or stick or if i always have to shift it and how?
It's actually a stick just like the others but has a power clutch. I wouldn't recommend buying one of those. They had a lot of problems. A lot of people converted them to regular stick.
