It's always interesting to get inside the head of a new-car buyer, in this case a friend who asked for advice shopping for a three-row crossover SUV for his growing family.
He spent a couple of weekends test-driving and examining the models I recommended, which included nearly every SUV in this class. They're all pretty darn good, and for many people, the choice comes down to monthly payments and subjective considerations I could never predict.
For example, he quickly rejected three of the crossovers because they were "chick cars." The Toyota Highlander, about as mainstream as they get, had a "screwy layout." (FYI: It doesn't.)
A couple of other potentials bit the dust because he didn't like the salespeople who helped - or didn't help - him. My advice: Go to a different dealer, say in San Marcos or Georgetown.
He ended up buying a Honda Pilot, an SUV I initially described to him as "industrial looking with a smart seating configuration, good reliability but poor gas mileage."
