It could hardly have been a more dramatic finale to a spectacular season's racing, as Saturday saw the 10th and final round of the Suzuki South Regional Motorcycle series at Cape Town’s Killarney circuit.
The championship was poised on a knife-edge as the old maestro, Malcom Rapson on the Racebase CBR1000RR, faced off against young gun Trevor Westman on the Walker Brothers/Biketique S1000RR, the latter having dominated the series since he got the big BMW midway through the season.
But it wasn't that simple; even if Westman won both the day's Superbike races, that wouldn't guarantee him the title. Rapson had built up enough of a points lead in the first half of the season that two second-place finishes behind Westman would secure him the championship by the tiniest of margins.
So Westman's tuner, former champion “Danie van Killarney” Maritz, now 45 years old, dusted off the Dries Pretorius Racing R1 which he'd last ridden in anger in 2009 and entered it with the intention of pushing Rapson down into third and ensuring his young star the title.
