Car dealer gets prison
A Richibucto car dealer who defrauded customers for about a quarter-million dollars was sentenced yesterday to three and one-half years in federal penitentiary.
Claude Thebeau, 45, owner of Exotic Import and Sales, was too emotional in the prisoners' dock to read the many-paged apology he had written out by hand.
"No. No," was all he could utter.
His 16 victims, according to their victim-impact statements, know something about emotions. Many of them related tales of deception and indifference at Thebeau's hands, the crimes leaving them sleepless, broke, deeply in debt for cars they never received, with some in psychiatric care from the stress, some with families fractured from their ordeal.
One was a single mom who had survived cancer twice, with a $12-per-hour job who lost her life's savings and still owes the bank almost $27,000 for a car she'll never see.
"It consumed me almost 24 hours per day," she wrote.
Thebeau's last words to her were "tough luck," she said.
