How to read obd codes on 1995 bmw 525i?

My friend has a 95 BMW 525i and the "check engine" light is on. I have found the manual online and it says on page 49 that it is possible to read the codes without a scan tool, simply by pressing the accelerator (all the way to the floor) five

The site I use says the same thing but you have to have the car key in the run position, without the car running.
