Are packaged bank accounts a rip off or real deal?
The FSA wants banks to ensure the insurance benefits bundled in these paid-for accounts are suitable for customers before they sign on the dotted line.
According to consumer champion Which? a third of people do not use any of the benefits offered, wasting up to £320million a year in monthly fees.
Packaged account costs range from £6.50 to £25 per month – a nice little earner for the banks. But with standard bank accounts costing nothing if you keep in the black, is there any point in paying up to £300 a year for extras?
As a rule of thumb, if you are an overseas traveller, a car owner and use a smartphone, packaged accounts are worth a closer look, but otherwise it’s best to give them a wide berth.
However, there are a couple of packaged accounts that stand out when it comes to value for money.
First is the Halifax Ultimate Reward account. It costs £15 per month but if you pay in £1,000 each month, you receive a credit of £5. So that drops the net monthly outlay to £10.
